Torrents, sharing and revenue streams oh my!!

With todays one off train of thought/ energized mental mussing I try and hammer out why making money off sharing others people stuff is wrong….. some of the time.

If a  sites main, 2nd or even 3rd goal/service is torrents non contracted/approved file sharing then it’s wrong to make money off it, why is it wrong you ask, because its directly making a profit from someone’s else’s blood and tears, corporate masters who bath in said blood and tears oblivious to all be damned this is not so much about them…or the DMCA which keeps them in sinew and bile..

An example of a site that is indirect, how about afterdawn.com I don’t see a A.D. supporting torrents directly as in hosting trackers and what not, what I see it indirectly supporting it via information and news, and indirect support via software loopholes. There is a difference in direct and indirect, cracks might use some IP directly in tiny bits and pieces so much so that’s its “indirect”.

More examples there of below.

Sharing copy circumvention that has in whole(as in all the copy protection that’s altered to patch software, not all the information to run the software just a few vital pieces) or part is IMO “indirect” and even if it was direct its rather easy to build a patch file that just applies the new information thus its kinda moot, even more so if you claim that it cannot be freely traded just cause you own it, as I have alluded to or said owning it means you only have profit rights.

Sharing the whole software would be “direct”. There’s no getting around that, this is black and white because around 50%(well 30-50% depending on who you believe) of the most frequently traded stuff is NEW, while anything older than 5 years makes up the rest of it.

Shearing a freeware program to rip or mount is “indirect”. This should be obvious, and as long as we have personal freedom there should be nothing wrong about it.

Shearing the whole media/medium is “direct”. Like software-kun above there’s no real wiggle room, but there again I am talking about profit made off it.

Sharing un copy righted/public domain works, this should be obvious to the theme of this musing its indirect. Furthermore I want you to think for a moment over something if we had no IP/CP laws would it be chaos or would live in a media industry based on who can provide better cheaper entertainment/products we would certainly not have much conglomeration of power and money we would have many more small business who thrive on working day to day to finish a project that brings in millions. We would have fewer media millionaires but have many more middle class workers who just happen to be artists.

But in our current less utopian world profit is something that only the IP/CP owners should have exclusivity to but distribution itself should always be in the whims of the public. Because they support media regardless of price and quality.

This is something neither side rarely bothers with because it tends to be an all or nothing argument, I don’t see it in such contrast. We could easily have both ,think legal sharing host services where donations taken directly through them for service cost the one who starts up and pays for some of the hosting cost runs the site normally but the donations are funneled directly to cost when costs are met there is an allowed 25% overflow and costs are caped and will not take more donations until it drops under 90% from 125%, the service takes 3-5% for operating fees and of that as much as 60% is funneled into organized media this way the people get their free stuff and the monolithic god of old gets pacified with some tributes that can get back to the artists if they are tenuous enough)  we could have a system that would allow for free shearing either by the system I mentioned or via a type of nonprofit where both gov and corp can go over excess revenue(25-50% over maintenance cost) but it’s an all or nothing illogical world of dog eat dog, why would the corporate empire share when it can walk upon the masses and still make money.

My point, even anarchy requires order and limits, without it it’s just another dog eat dog world no better than the last. Meet the new boos same as the old boss,ect,ect.
